The new model of the Ferrari 348 represented a radical departure from the design philosophy of its predecessor, not only in mechanical layout, but also in body styling and chassis construction. Along with its sibling the Ferrari 348 TS, it was the first series-production Ferrari not to have a separate tubular steel chassis. Instead, it used a pressed steel chassis, with a separate tubular steel subframe bolted to it for the engine, with the body panels robot-welded and bolted to the main structure.
The bodywork was designed by Pininfarina and had a strong family resemblance to the Testarossa, but on a smaller scale. The similarities were particularly noticeable in the horizontal air intake ducts in the doors for the side radiators and in the treatment of the rear lights, which are hidden behind matt black grilles that occupy the full width of the rear.
