It marks Ferrari's return to an abandoned architecture since  the Ferrari Daytona with the V12 engine in the front position. It has a 2-seat configuration, and exists with Berlinetta  and convertible bodies, both two-door, which are commercially called 550 Maranello and 550 Barchetta, respectively. The 550 Barchetta was officially unveiled at the 2000 Paris Motor Show and all 448 units were manufactured in 2001.
